Skilled grafter Le Duc Giap from Thanh Oai district, Hanoi can earn hundreds of millions of Vietnam dong during the traditional Lunar New Year (Tet) by selling pomelo trees which he has engrafted with up to 10 different varieties of fruit.
Giap says each tree is selected for the soundness of its rootstock and branch strength before being engrafted with different fruits of the same genus, such as kumquat, finger citron, and orange.
Each plant will cost between VND1.5 million-VND10 million so Mr Giap’s family can earn a healthy income of VND300-500 million every year.
The different varieties of fruit are carefully prepared so that they will ripen throughout the Tet holiday.
Many farmers have tried to learn from Mr Giap’s experience in grafting but only some of them have been successful.
