1. In April 2017, Nguyen Dinh Ton Nu, with her special essay and great achievements, successfully won the VND7 billion scholarship for 4-year study at Harvard University.

In her essay, Ton Nu explained that her name means the ‘daughter of Nguyen Dinh family’. The name expresses the father’s wish to see his daughter become the successor of a family with many members being teachers and intellectuals.

In an essay to Harvard, Ton Nu also mentioned ‘Cong Huong’, an education project she implemented when she was a 10th grader. Instead of writing about success, she wrote about how she failed, what she had to exchange for her belief, and what she learned from the project.

Phan Dang Nhat Minh from Quang Tri province, the champion of the 2017 Road to Olympia, a contest for high school students, is dubbed the ‘king of records’.

2. Vu Huy Cang, a student at the Electric Power University, is called a ‘man with golden heart’ as he gave back a huge amount of money (VND320 million) to the passenger who was his client.

Like many other students, Cang worked as taxi motorbike driver to get money to fund his study. The passenger left money in the motorbike’s U-box and forgot to take it. Cang then decided to report the case to the police and give back the money, though he understands that the sum was big enough to change his life.

3. Phan Dang Nhat Minh from Quang Tri province, the champion of the 2017 Road to Olympia, a contest for high school students, is dubbed the ‘king of records’.

With quick ‘like the wind’ and exact answers to the questions in different fields raised at the competition, Minh broke many records in terms of scores gained by contestants.

Minh said he wants balance between learning and playing. So, he decided not to study at schools for the gifted, but instead attends a normal school.

4. Hoang Huu Quoc Huy from Ba Ria – Vung Tau is called the ‘golden boy’ because he won the golden medal at the 2017 Mathematics Olympiad which he attended for the first time.

Huy is one of three competitors who got the highest scores in 2017.

The international press commented that IMO 2017 is one of the most difficult competitions. However, Huy and his friend still had great achievements with 155 scores, ranked third out of 112 countries.

5. Nguyen Anh Khoi is just 15 years old, but he has set many records for the Vietnamese chess team, both in Vietnam and on the international battlefield.

2017 was a good year for Khoi as he won the championship at the Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships.
